About Me
I am currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Statistics and Data Science at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.
Before joining the University of Pennsylvania, I was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Statistics and Data Science at Carnegie Mellon University, and I spent a year as a Stein's Fellow at Stanford Statistics Department. I got my Ph.D. in Statistics at Berkeley Statistics Department advised by two amazing supervisors Martin Wainwright and Aditya Guntuboyina; I was also associated with the Berkeley Artificial Intelligence Research group (BAIR).
My research interests lie broadly in the span of statistics, mathematical optimization, information theory and machine learning. More specifically, I have been developing theoretical and algorithmic tools for learning from high dimensional and structured data, and understanding the sample efficiency in reinforcement learning. I am also interested in problems arising from the interplay between statistical accuracy and computational properties.

I taught a short course at Beijing International Center for Mathematical Research and School of Mathematical Science, Peking University, in July 2023, on “Statistical and Algorithmic Foundations of Reinforcement Learning”.
I gave a tutorial in ACM SIGMETRICS, 2023 on “Non-asymptotic Analysis for Reinforcement Learning”, jointly with Yuxin Chen and Yuejie Chi.
Gen Li joined Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) as an Assistant Professor of Statistics in Fall 2023. Congratulations, Gen!
